Katarina Witt began to ice skate at the age five years old. It was not long before her abilities became apparent and in Karl-Marx-Stadt she was accepted into an institution specifically designed for children who have athletic talents. It was here that she was introduced to her coach Jutta Muller. Witt made her breakthrough in 1982, after she was second in her first World Championships at Copenhagen. Her graceful style and elegance of Witt caught the eye of all and she has dominating her sport since then. Olympic triumph at Sarajevo, in the Sarajevo Winter Games of 1984, Katarina Witz won the ladies' silver medal in figure skating following an extremely close contest. In a tighter competition four years later, Witt won the medal. She did not win the free skating contest however, she was awarded gold for her results during the compulsory figure and short program. Witt became the first female repeated winner of figure skating following Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame Witt, who had achieved success in the world of film and television as an actress before returning to figure skating in 1994 to compete at Lillehammer Winter Games 1994. Though she did not get a medal, she delighted her fans despite coming in seventh. Witt was elected to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1995.
